For our 15 year old son’s very first surgery he was quite nervous. I just want to say Thank You to our Anesthesiologist, Dr. Susan Smith, who came in and made him feel so comfortable. Dr. Smith talked with him and helped him understand what was going on. After surgery, and after he awoke, she came by and stayed and talked for quite some time with us all! As nervous parents who never want to see their child have to go through surgery this was a great experience and we really appreciate Dr. Smith going out of her way to take such good care of our son.

In December 2010, my 14 year old daughter Elizabeth was diagnosed with a birth defect called malrotation. We were told she had to have surgery immediately. There are moments in your life that you hope you never have to have and one of those is handing your child over for a medical procedure with anesthesia. My little 7 ½ month old girl needed to have an MRI and we had Dr. Red Starks as our Anesthesiologists. He called me the night before and even called the day after the procedure to check in with us. I was at total peace handing her over to him knowing he was so kind hearted and was totally there to make my little girls procedure smooth and safe. A parent’s worst nightmare is watching their sick baby, wondering if she/he will live or not. That was my reality for nearly 6 weeks, as my daughter, Harlow, struggled to fight off Septic Shock. It’s hard to find any silver lining in a time like that, but I must say that Dr. Red Starks sure made a horrific situation, as pleasant as possible. It’s so difficult to place your child’s life into someone else’s hands, but I wholeheartedly trusted Dr. Starks. His positivity and gentle manner made all the difference in the world to us. He sang Harlow songs before each of her surgeries and put all of us at ease. He went the extra mile every procedure and made extra visits to check on my family. He truly is one of the kindest and purest souls I have ever encountered and we feel beyond blessed to have met him. It’s crazy how even in the scariest of situations, how his presence alone, made us feel comforted. Besides his brilliance and skillset, I always felt he was fighting the fight with us the entire time and he celebrated every victory along side us. What a blessing he is.
